The 188-year-old Kerala State Central Library, popularly known as ‘Trivandrum Public Library’, one of the oldest library in the country will soon have a separate wing for visually challenged bibliophiles. A special wing for ‘Braille’ books will be opened soon adjacent to the main library building, located in the heart of Trivandrum. This is as per plan of the authorities make the 19th century institution differently-abled friendly. The library houses one of the finest collections of rare books from 16th century. It was established in the year 1829.

Authorities have confirmed that work is underway to convert a room of the three-storey new building, being set up in front of the heritage Gothic style main structure, into the Braille wing. The Braille wing will have all the modern facilities to make visually impaired visitors comfortable. State librarian P K Sobhana told that they would work along with Dehradun-based National Institute for the Visually Handicapped and Kerala Blind Association for making the initiative a grand success.
